Tournament History

Where it all began

IEM Cebit

Hanover, Germany

In 2007 at CeBIT, one of the world’s largest technology expos at the time, the first form of Intel® Extreme Masters took place. IEM was a step up compared to the Intel Friday Night Games that had come before it - a higher prize pool, a big expo crowd, and the promise of a truly global competition.

Players competed on chunky CRT monitors, playing Counter-Strike 1.6 amongst other titles. A number of now endemic esports teams made their mark with wins at IEM CeBIT - mousesports in 2008, fnatic in 2009, and NaVi’s back-to-back wins in 2010 & 2011.

By IEM CeBIT’s last iteration in 2013, it was clear that the tournament had outgrown its surroundings, and something needed to change.

Hanover, Katowice,

And now Kraków

For almost two decades, Intel Extreme Masters has built a heritage full of emotional and defining moments in esports history. From the early days in Hannover to the rise of new legends in Katowice, every stop along the way has left its mark on our legacy. As we begin a new chapter of this story, we look forward to continuing it with the world’s best gamers and esports fans, as they add their mark in Kraków, on a bigger scale than ever before.

Yes. Tickets are capped at 8 per customer.

You can expect an array of partner activations and on-site activities including the ESL Shop throughout the event, similar to IEM Cologne.

In the past, the free viewing area was reserved for IEM Expo visitors. IEM Kraków won’t feature a separate expo zone and so will be fully ticketed.

You will receive the sales date, prices and presale link on the email you used to purchase the add-on before tickets officially go on sale. Information will also be available on our official channels.

To not miss any updates on when tickets for next IEM Cologne go live, make sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow ESLCS on XInstagram, and Facebook.

IEM Kraków will be taking the spot of IEM Katowice as one of the two Championship events with the ESL Pro Tour ecosystem (IEM Cologne being the second one). The tournament will therefore follow the format of a Championship event, featuring Stage 1, Stage 2 and the Playoffs.

As per our announcement in January, all teams participating at IEM Kraków will be invited based on Valve Regional Standings (VRS). Invites will follow the first available monthly VRS publication of January 2026.

Intel® Extreme Masters Enters a New Chapter as IEM Kraków Expands a 19-Year Legacy to a New City

IEM Kraków will welcome fans and players from around the globe to TAURON Arena Kraków on February 6-8, 2026

Thursday, May 29, 2025, Kraków:
ESL FACEIT Group (EFG), the leading esports and video game entertainment company, today announced that Intel® Extreme Masters (IEM) will move its most historic tournament from Katowice to Kraków, Poland. Building on a 19-year-long tradition and legacy of the longest-running professional esports tournament circuit, which began in Hannover, Germany, the landmark tournament breaks new ground, as it's set to take place in Kraków for the very first time. The final three days of IEM Kraków will be hosted live at the TAURON Arena Kraków on February 6-8, welcoming thousands of passionate fans to enjoy world-class Counter-Strike action live.

Taking the next step and transferring the ESL Pro Tour Championship event to Kraków is a natural evolution of the tournament and a commitment to meeting the growing expectations of the community eager to watch Counter-Strike on the biggest stages. The new setting allows for a larger audience and a world-class in-arena experience that continues to push the boundaries of live esports production. As part of a new multi-year agreement, both EFG and the city of Kraków are committed to establishing IEM Kraków as a recurring event in the global esports calendar for years to come.

"Kraków is a city proud of its royal history, but simultaneously open to the future and innovation. The global reach of Intel Extreme Masters Kraków is a chance to present Kraków to new audiences as an ideal destination for business, tourism, and investment."

Fans staying in Kraków will have an unique chance to get up and close to the Intel Extreme Masters trophy on May 30 - June 2 at Galeria Krakowska. On June 8, the trophy will be available to visitors of Kraków City Hall during an open day and will remain in the city hall for a 2 week period.
Commencing on January 27, IEM Kraków will set the stage for the world’s best 24 Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) teams battling it out to secure six coveted spots in the Playoff stage of the competition. With $1,250,000 total winnings on the line and one of the most iconic esports trophies, the tournament is poised to elevate the fan experience while honoring its legacy.

Kraków is a city with a unique atmosphere — it combines historic charm with contemporary energy. In the heart of the city, life pulsates around the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall, St. Mary's Basilica, and Wawel Castle — places that attract tourists from all over Poland and the world. However, it is also worth looking beyond the historic center — for example, to the atmospheric Kazimierz district or Nowa Huta. Designed during the communist era as a model socialist district, today it delights with its unique architecture, wide avenues, industrial character, and routes and museums that tell the story of Poland's post-war history.
The former capital of Poland is home to over 50 museums, which allow visitors to discover both the most valuable works of art and the fascinating history of the region. In the Czartoryski Museum, you can admire Leonardo da Vinci's famous “Lady with an Ermine,” and in the National Museum, paintings by Jan Matejko, including “The Battle of Grunwald.” The Wawel Royal Castle impresses with its collection of tapestries and royal chambers, Schindler's Factory tells the moving story of the inhabitants during World War II, and MOCAK – the Museum of Contemporary Art – presents the latest artistic trends. In addition, there are such diverse places as the Polish Aviation Museum and Manggha, combining Japanese culture with Polish tradition. With such a rich offer, every visitor will find something for themselves – from classic masterpieces to modern installations.

Until March 1, the Krzysztofory Palace is hosting a unique exhibition of Krakow nativity scenes, which are a symbol of local tradition and are included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. These intricately crafted structures, inspired by the city's architecture, delight with their details and colors, and viewing them is a great opportunity to learn about a unique element of the culture of Kraków. The city also offers a wealth of events at prestigious institutions – the Krakow Opera invites you to opera and ballet performances, the Krakow Philharmonic to classical music concerts, and numerous theaters, such as the Juliusz Słowacki Theater, the Bagatela Theater, and the STU Theater, present both classic dramas and modern productions. For lovers of popular music, concert clubs such as Klub Studio, Kwadrat, and HYPE PARK, where artists of various genres perform, are the ideal choice. Thanks to such a wide range of cultural offerings, Kraków in February and early March becomes a place where tradition blends harmoniously with modernity.

Kraków also encourages players to discover history in a way that is familiar to them. Kraków Fortress, a 19th-century system of forts, resembles the strategic maps known from tactical games. A walk around the monuments can be treated as an immersion in the world of RPG, while the boulevards along the Vistula River and city parks offer a moment of respite from screens and competition. For those interested in computer and console games, there are places such as Cybermachina and Hex Gaming Lounge, where you can use high-quality equipment, take part in tournaments, or simply spend time playing your favorite titles. If you prefer a more sociable atmosphere, Kazimierz has places such as Boardowa, which combine board and card games. Many cafes in the city also cater to gamers, offering space to relax and play.
Kraków combines tradition with modernity, becoming a place that offers both a wealth of culture and a dynamically developing esports scene. If you want to plan your visit in more detail, you can check out the tourist materials prepared by the city at this link.
