While DreamHack WC3 Open: Winter season is running, we wanted to reach out and to share our thoughts on the latest and future plans for the ESL Pro Tour for WC3.
We are planning LAN. It’s been almost 2 years since the last time we were able to gather players together for an in-person competition and we are moving ahead to try again. On November 25-28, 16 of the best players from across Asia, Europe and the Americas will compete in our EPT Championship which will take place out of the ESL Stockholm Studio to determine who has earned the title of EPT WC3 2021 Champion.
We've successfully brought players back safely to in-person competition in other game titles and we are able to take these learnings and apply them to our WC3 Championship. Safety for players and staff will remain our highest priority as we look to deploy our ESL Covid Protocols while abiding by local governing guidance.
We’re ecstatic with this opportunity and are committed to doing everything we can to ensure ending 2021 with the Championship that the ESL Pro Tour deserves.
We have made the difficult decision that the EPT for WC3 will not continue into 2022. The DreamHack WC3 Championship will mark the end of the ESL Pro Tour: Warcraft® III. Unfortunately the program didn’t reach the targets that were set upon it across 2020 and 2021.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce this news as we have been operating WC3 competitions since 2002 when we first introduced the game title to the ESL Meisterschaft. The game helped pave the road for where we are today as a company. Having been in and around the game since it’s origins, we’ve been thrilled to have brought competition to the game over the last few years within the ESL Pro Tour.
We will continue to evaluate the future of Warcraft III as it does hold a special place at ESL and we’ll do all we can to make sure the rest of the year is memorable, to give the community all it deserves for these final events.
This is our vision for esports. This is the ESL Pro Tour for Warcraft III, a yearly competition that combines the past legacies of Blizzard, DreamHack, and ESL. Now in our second year we're building upon our system to ensure that anyone can sign up and play anywhere in the world. Our end goal is simple:
Create a world where everybody can be somebody.

StarCraft® II & Warcraft® III competitions are set to return in May 2021, with qualifiers starting in April, for the lead up to the next ESL Pro Tour Championship of 2022. Today’s announcement confirms the full calendar for both titles, an advanced planning for combating the dynamic COVID-19 status as well as the removal of region lock which will see South Korean players able to compete on a regular basis in international SC2 tournaments since 2016.
If you already are familiar with the Pro Tour and want to learn more about our plans and ideas for competitive Warcraft III please check out our explanation video linked above.
The ESL Pro Tour is a circuit combining ESL and DreamHack Warcraft III tournaments which will be connected by a ranking system into one narrative that builds towards the WC3 Championship. With this change to our offering we will have a more complete and simpler path from zero to hero for aspiring players, a more compelling story to follow for existing WarCraft III fans and a much more transparent structure for new esports fans. This will be the ultimate expression of our purpose: to create a world where everybody can be somebody.
Currently, CS:GO and StarCraft II have their ESL Pro Tours as well.
Please check out our explanation video for more news on the format of the WarCraft III ESL Pro Tour. More news will follow soon.
While the ESL Pro Tour was created with DreamHack and ESL being two distinct organizations, on October 1, 2020 a merger combined the two into a single company.
